A few months ago, something exciting happened to me and I forgot to share it here at the time. I was interviewed for one of my favorite music podcasts, The Jazz Session! It was great to get a chance to chat with host Jason Crane, and an honor to be featured on this diverse and informative show. If you would like to listen to the episode, you can click on the link below to go to the Jazz Session website (you can also find it in iTunes).
Dear friends and followers,
Apologies for my prolonged absence from this section of the site! Since I last posted, I completed my MA in composition, culminating in a recital that featured new works for string quartet, wind quartet, vocal ensemble, jazz trio and a 12-piece mixed ensemble. The night before that recital, I was privileged to perform at Roulette in New York City as part of Anthony Braxton’s Falling River Nonet. This was an ensemble composed of many musicians that I respect and admire, and was a musical highlight of my life thus far! The next big event was my move with my significant other to Morelia, Mexico, where I have now been for 9 months. It has been a big change, and I am working on integrating myself into another culture, language and music scene!
Currently I am working on musical … Read More »
After months of buildup I’m so exited that my and Towering Poppies’ debut album ‘Fortune Songs’ is officially released! It is now available for purchase on Bandcamp (CDs and digital), iTunes, CD Baby, and will be instore in New Zealand at Real Groovy (Auckland) and Slow Boat Records (Wellington).
I’ve been fortunate to receive some really nice reviews of the record so far from the likes of Dave Sumner (eMusic), Stephen Graham (UK Jazz Critic-Jazzwise/Freelance), S. Victor Aaron (Something Else Reviews) & Richard B. Kamins (Step Tempest). ‘Confidence (One)’ was featured as Download of the Day on AllAboutJazz.com, and ‘Lover’s Knot’ is featured as part of August’s Utne Reader Music Sampler, with a nice blurb from editor Christian Williams.
As part of my adventures in musical promotion I also starred in my first mini-documentary: an EPK about the album made by my … Read More »
May Cheung & Towering Poppies
Monday, August 6th
Rockwood Music Hall
(Last Gig as an NYC Local!)
This Monday sees the launch of a new collaboration between myself and Canadian Singer/Songwriter May Cheung. May’s music is catchy, hearfelt and soulful, reflecting both her jazz background and her love of folk/R&B and soul music. Monday August 6th will see us presenting a new combined ensemble playing May’s music (with horn arrangements by me), a couple of tunes of mine and some rogue covers. It has been great fun for me to work on new arrangements for this show! This will also be my last show in town before moving to Connecticut at the end of August to start my Masters Degree in Composition at Wesleyan University. It should be a really fun night of music and it’d be great … Read More »
It’s midsummer and I’m escaping from the New York City heat for a week in Portland Oregon. When I get back I am really looking forward to playing a show at one of my favorite Brooklyn venues, SEEDS. That is coming up this Wednesday, July 25th at 8:30 PM, and features a new special guest, Jonathan Goldberger, on guitar (filling in for our pianist extraordinaire Cat Toren, currently on tour in Canada). We’re going to play a set of new and newish material, so all of you well versed in our older stuff from the album can still come along and hear something different!
Speaking of the album, the release date is drawing nearer. It will be out on August 14th, and you will be able to pick up a copy (physical or digital) on Bandcamp, or download it from iTunes. … Read More »
